In the air and soaring!

We're almost at the close of our first 2 weeks of school!  All elementary classes have been to the LMC for class and to check out books.  I used the first class to describe the changes made in the elementary LMC.  One new thing I am thinking about is letting the preschool students check out books once a month.  If we do, it will be later in the fall.

STAFF: This year Betsy Mortenson works for a little over an hour in the morning in the elementary LMC.  Sybil Johnson staffs the HS LMC until last period of the day and then she goes to the elementary LMC.  Rene Abels is the supervising aide in the 5-8 LMC in Kanawha all day.

Elementary: The new books from the Iowa Choice Awards and the batch that I ordered are processed and on display.  Ask your child if he/she checked out a new "NEW" book!  High School: Mrs. Johnson has started process of the new books for the HS LMC.  She has been busy getting the 9-12 students settled with their laptops.  MS: Mrs. Abels has the new books ready for checkout.

The PK-Grade 4 are going to celebrate International Dot Day during the week of September 23-27. [I know a week late!] This day takes its name from the book, "The Dot," by Peter H. BACK TO SCHOOL!

Hello, Eagles!

It's almost time to restock those backpacks with school supplies and head back to school!  I've been at the Britt schools and the custodians are busy making everything spic and span.  There are boxes of new teacher supplies lining the office wall and more and more staff members will be stopping by the schools to check on things.  The countdown has begun!

There are changes in the elementary LMC also.

  • I've revamped the nonfiction (true, factual books) section and added Dewey Decimal number identification tags.
  • There's also been a complete inventory taken and some weeding in the NF area. Many books that were older than 1990 (almost 25 years) or hadn't been checked out in over 10 years were removed from the collection.  These books will be offered first to staff for their classroom collection and then the remainder offered free to students in late August/early September.
  • ABC author identification tags were added to the Easy/Everybody picture book section.  Inventory and weeding was begun in this area and will continue until finished.
  • The students will start September with new books to read.  Our collection additions will include 2013 winners of the Iowa Choice Awards.  We have the Goldfinch collection (lower elementary) and the Childrens' Choice collection (upper elementary).  Also our shipment of about 50 new books should have arrived and been processed.
  • Along with usual library class days on Day 4 & Day 6, I will also be in the district on Day 2 to assist students and staff with library questions. Once a month I will spend a day at the MS and most of those days will be on Day 3.
  • Please don't forget to plan for the fall Book Fair in the elementary building and the MS Book Fair in March. We were able to get many new books with the profits from these sales.  Thank You so much for your support!
I hope you've been doing some reading over the summer!  I was able to get in a few books myself!  I even listened to a few audio books in my car while taking several trips to Colorado and southern Iowa.

I've planned some special events for the library classes for the 2013-14 school year.  I can't wait to see you all back in the library and to meet the new students!  Keep looking back here for weekly updates!
